Massive protostars as gamma-ray sources

چکیده
Context. Massive protostars have associated bipolar outflows with velocities of hundreds of km s. Such outflows can produce strong shocks when interact with the ambient medium leading to regions of non-thermal radio emission. Aims. We aim at exploring under which conditions relativistic particles are accelerated at the terminal shocks of the protostellar jets and can produce significant gamma-ray emission. Methods. We estimate the conditions necessary for particle acceleration up to very high energies and gamma-ray production in the non-thermal hot spots of jets associated with massive protostars embedded in dense molecular clouds. Results. We show that relativistic Bremsstrahlung and proton-proton collisions can make molecular clouds with massive young stellar objects detectable by the Fermi satellite at MeV-GeV energies and by Cherenkov telescope arrays in the GeV-TeV range. Conclusions. Gamma-ray astronomy can be used to probe the physical conditions in star forming regions and particle acceleration processes in the complex environment of massive molecular clouds.

Ggd 27: X-rays from a Massive Protostar with an Outflow
We report the discovery of a cluster of Class I protostars in GGD 27. One of these protostars is the previously known, centrally located, GGD 27-ILL, which powers a massive bipolar outflow. We show that GGD 27-ILL, which is known to be the bright infrared (IR) source, IRAS 18162–2048, and a compact radio continuum source, is also the newly discovered hard X-ray source, GGD 27-X. The observation...

The nature of the unidentified gamma-ray point sources in the galactic plane is a long standing puzzle of gamma-ray astronomy. Kaaret and Cottam (1996) showed that 16 of the 25 unidentified gamma-ray point sources near the galactic plane lie in or near associations of massive stars, likely sites of pulsar formation, and that the intrinsic luminosity distribution of the sources is consistent wit...
متن کاملA STUDY OF GAMMA RAY EXPOSURE BUILDUP FACTORS IN STRATIFIED SHIELDS FOR POINT ISOTROPIC SOURCES, INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF INCOHERENT AND COHERENT SCATTERING
The effects of including incoherent (bound-electron) and coherent (Rayleigh) scattering in exposure buildup factor calculations for point isotropic gamma ray sources, penetrating a two-layer water-lead shield have been investigated in the gamma ray energy (E?) range of 40 keV to 3 MeV. Incoherent scattering decreases the values of these factors in both layers up to E? ~ 200 keV and the effect i...
متن کاملGamma-ray Bursts versus Quasars: Lyman-α Signatures of Reionization versus Cosmological Infall
Lyman-α absorption is a prominent cosmological tool for probing both galactic halos and the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We consider a variety of sources that can be used as the Lyman-α emitters for this purpose. Among these sources, we argue that quasars are the best probes of the evolution of massive halos, while γ-ray bursts represent the cleanest sources for studying the reionizat...
